I’ll get straight to the point by mentioning that this is the solution I use for waxing. It’s perfect for me because it’s relatively painless. I use it everywhere.
It’s a warm Summer afternoon and although the weather is perfect, you are too busy rushing around from salon to salon trying in vain to book yourself in for wax to enjoy it.
Unfortunately, you have left going for the wax to the last minute and the beach party that you have been looking forward to for weeks is happening in a few hours! Ok, there is still hope, you are almost positive that you have waxing strips at home that will get the job done.
You get home, unpack your bathroom cupboards, and realize with horror that your waxing strips are finished! You are running out of time and the only alternative is to make your DIY waxing strips. The question is, what can be used as an alternative to waxing strips?
There are several ways in which to make your own waxing strips and believe it or not a lot of people do this to save both time and money.
In this article, we are going to share some ideas on alternative ways to wax if you have run out of waxing strips. We will also discuss how you can make your own wax as well as the benefits of using homemade waxing strips and wax.
By the way, if you’re in a hurry, this is what I’m currently using to wax:
The Best Wax Strip Alternatives
Have you run out of wax strips? Here are some practical, money-saving, and efficient items that you can use as a substitute for traditional store-bought wax strips.
Always try to keep your magazines aside after reading them. You never know when you may need to use them again. Glossy magazines can make extremely efficient waxing strips.
The part of the magazine that you are going to use will be the front and back cover of the magazine as they are normally the sturdiest. Cut these magazine covers into strips, and you are ready to go!
These magazine-made strips work very well with wax and are often used as an alternative to store-bought waxing strips with many people agreeing that they work even better than normal waxing strips.
If you are not one for reading and do not have a magazine lying around your home, then you can use an old piece of clothing such as a T-shirt to make the perfect waxing strips. Make sure, however, that the material that you are going to use is clean before cutting out a few strips.
The great thing about material strips is that they can be washed and reused over and over again. If you are going to need thicker strips for the leg area, then it is a good idea to cut up an old pair of jeans to make thicker waxing strips.
Waxing Without Strips (Wax Strip Substitutes)
You can wax without strips if the wax that you are using is harder than usual and can be removed without having to use waxing strips.
This product is a great wax strip alternative, check the price here.
Do check it out, it’s excellent value for money.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to wax without strips:
- Make sure that your skin is clean before you start the waxing process.
- Thinly apply the wax to your skin and leave it to settle for a minute or two.
- Once the wax has hardened hold the area of the skin that you are waxing tightly and gently pull the wax off your skin.
- Always remember to use a good aftercare product on your skin when you are finished waxing.
Amazingly, this way of waxing can be better for more sensitive skin and is often used to wax the eyebrows and upper lip area.
What You Shouldn’t Use As An Alternative To Wax Strips
Alright, so we have gone through the items that you can use in place of traditional wax strips. Let’s take a look at what you should rather steer away from to avoid pain, discomfort, and unwanted skin infections.
Let’s cut straight to the chase. Yes, you can, if extremely desperate, wax with duct tape. You would use it in the same way that you would use a normal wax strip by cutting it into pieces and putting it on top of the wax.
Duct tape is very sticky and can be used to pull the hair off your skin, but this comes at a price as it can be extremely painful and can even damage the skin.
Parchment paper will not work. It is extremely thin and will tear while you are trying to remove it from your skin. Bad idea. Waste of time.
Paper towels are not going to do the trick as they tend to soak up the wax and then stick to the skin. This is a rather messy alternative to wax strips and will cause you to waste valuable time while you are trying to pick bits of paper towel off your face.
Making Your Own Wax
If you have gotten used to making your own wax strips, then why not go one step further and try to make the wax as well.
There are three types of wax that you can make from the comfort of your home. Each one of these waxes can effectively remove the hair from the areas that you need to be waxed.
# 1 Sugar Wax and How To Make Your Own
To make this wax you will need two cups of sugar, one teaspoon of salt, two tablespoons of water, and a quarter cup of lemon juice.
The next step is easy. Melt all the ingredients together in a pot over medium heat and stir the mixture continuously as it starts to boil. The mixture will begin to caramelize. Once this has happened you simply need to allow it to cool and then apply it to the areas of the skin that you need to wax.
Because the ingredients in this wax can be used all over the body it is often the best wax to use if you have sensitive skin. This is because it is made from only natural ingredients like sugar, water, and lemon juice.
# 2 Hard Wax and How To Make It Yourself
This is one of the most common types of wax and is mainly used to wax the more sensitive areas of the body. It is made of beeswax and rosin, and you are also able to add other ingredients such as olive oil or coconut oil to the mix.
You will require only beeswax and rosin to make this type of wax. Start by melting the beeswax and rosin to a consistency that is going to be easy to use when waxing. Do not apply this wax if it is too hot as it will burn the skin.
Once the wax has cooled down a bit apply it to the area that you want to wax, let it harden, and pull it off in the opposite direction of the way that your hair has been growing.
Hard wax is best to use on the eyebrows and upper lip as well as the underarms and bikini area. If you are making hard wax, then you are not going to need wax strips as this wax can be pulled off without having to use them.
# 3 Making Soft Wax
Soft wax is perfect for use on larger areas of the body that are not as sensitive as your face. You can wax your arms, legs, and other more robust areas of the body with soft wax. This wax has wonderful antimicrobial properties and can even be used to heal wounds.
Soft wax needs to be removed with wax strips. Apply the strips to the wax as soon as you have applied it to your skin. This will help them to stick to the wax properly and be pulled off with ease.
Here are the ingredients to make a simple to use soft wax:
- One tablespoon of lemon juice
- One-quarter of a cup of honey
- One cup of sugar
Melt the sugar in a pot on medium heat until the mixture has caramelized. Now you can add the honey and the lemon juice. Your mixture will resemble batter but should not be too thick. If you find that your mixture is too thick then you may add a bit of water.
Once you have made the wax apply it to the skin when it is lukewarm. Thereafter put a wax strip over the soft wax and pull!
The Benefits Of Waxing At Home
Being able to make your own wax and waxing strips can be greatly beneficial due to many reasons.
Here are a few benefits to making your own waxing strips and wax:
Making your own wax strips and wax can help you to save hundreds of dollars as you won’t need to visit your beauty salon as often.
Many salons tend to use wax that is not made from all-natural ingredients. This can cause skin rashes, irritation, and even allergic reactions if you have extremely sensitive skin.
Privacy and Comfort
You can wax from the comfort of your own home at any time of the day or night. If you find that you are uncomfortable with other people waxing intimate areas of your body, then this will give you the freedom to do it yourself without having to visit a salon.
