I bet if you asked a good mix of people what their biggest fears or most worried about skincare woes were, scars would be up there. Of course, they’re nothing to be ashamed of having on your body. Even believing wholeheartedly that’s true and understanding that it’s true no matter how our scars got there, but we’re all a little self-conscious when it comes to scaring.

Do you agree?

Over the years, it’s been easy to listen to the rave reviews of miracle scar treatment programs and maybe experiment in trying out different things. However, with each trial, you have to ask yourself, but do they work?

Hmm, even after years of using all of the popular scar treatment products, I’m honestly not too sure that they are a worthy investment.

Sometimes I’ve felt like lines have slightly faded, but they never really seem to go away completely. And while I don’t believe in miracles, after all, a scar is called a scar for a reason, I honestly thought I’d see some improvement.

Whether it’s a permanent blemish caused by acne, accidents or operations, they’re definitely hard to accept. On top of that, it can be far more than taxing trying to find a product that works – especially when you think of the time, hope and money that can go into that long and frustrating search.

So, with that in mind and despite my wariness to put energy into another product I didn’t have high hopes for, I thought I’d give Mederma’s Advanced Scar Gel a go. Cracking this little beauty challenge is a big deal for me. I’m trying to see if it’s as good as they say and if this lotion is truly worth all the hype that it has been receiving. But enough of that, let’s get to it, shall we?

Settle in and start scrolling for our complete Mederma Advanced Scar Gel review. We break down everything you need to know and then pass along firsthand experience, both from other users across the internet and me.

What’s it all about?

Woman Using Scar Gel

On the surface, Mederma Advanced Scar Gel seems like your typical cream that promises wonders. And why wouldn’t we all initially think that? That’s been our experience with every other lotion claiming to have powers to take away our scarring once and for all. But after a little research on the science behind the formula, reading product reviews and giving it a go for myself, I’m now not so skeptical.

This one could be something special.

The team behind Mederma have gone through extensive research and clinical trials to prove that the formula (that comes in a gel form, not a cream – hurrah!) does improve the three main issues with scars – the colour, the texture and the overall appearance. Generally, users experienced a 36% improvement in their symptoms within an eight week period, to be exact.

Reassuringly, I also spotted that the brand suggests more doctors and pharmacists recommend the Advanced Scar Gel than any other scars for both new and older scars! Now that’s saying something – a brand can’t just claim that doctors prescribe it to their patients. It’s got to be true in order to promote it. And if the medical professionals are saying that this product is really that good, I couldn’t not give it the benefit of the doubt, could I?

Another benefit to Mederma Advanced Scar Gel is that the formula works not just for injury or surgery based scaring. It’s good to know that this stuff is proven to repair the damage caused by burns and acne scaring too. These are two of the most self-esteem knocking scars out there!

With that in mind, I knew that it was worth seeing what the Advanced Scar Gel could do for me.

And how is it meant to work?

Quite simply, you use it just once a day and that’s it. Suggesting a gentle application, it can take between three and six months on existing scars but only eight weeks for a new one. As you can see, the time frame that the team recommends you use it for can vary. But, the experts all agree that you should expect to see some improvement from four weeks onwards.

Just to clarify, they’re classifying new scars as ones that new skin have just formed over. This phase of healing can be seen when no scabs or stitches are left, which can be generally around two weeks after the injury or surgery. Not bad huh! With acne, new scars describe the blemish spots that have healed and where the skin is no longer broken.

Once your healing process has gotten to either of these points, then you can get to work.

And if you’re worried about getting through the small tube of gel way quicker than you want to be, remember that Mederma recommends only using just a teeny thin layer. As long as there’s no wet or sticky feeling left after you rub it in, you’re good! If the skin has started to flake or dry out, then you’re definitely using too much – so a little goes a really long way here.

Scar healing

All in all, just use your best judgement. Be gentle with your healing skin. Use the product regularly, but not too often. And be patient with your results.

So, what’s the skinny?

I just have to start by saying that it definitely does what it says on the tin in terms of application and processes. The manufacturers warn you that a little bit will go a long way and they couldn’t be more correct.

You really don’t have to use a ton of this product at all. It’s a clear gel and easy to use. Applying a teeny amount of the gel is clean and simple. It even smells okay which is always a big indicator for me.

I don’t know about you, but using a product that has an awful smell eventually puts me off, especially having to use it for weeks or months on end! We all know that consistency is key in any skin treatment program. However, it’s so hard to keep up with something that smells horrible.

After regularly applying my Mederma Advanced Scar Gel to both acne scarring on my face and a recent burn on my hand that I have from cooking, it wasn’t long before I could notice a difference. I’d say the improvements became clearly visible around the one month mark.

My skin started to look smoother on the scar and much more like the rest of my skin. On my face with the acne pits, the permanent blemishes were definitely fading. As these were much worse than my cooking burn to begin with, I knew I’d need to keep up the application for this to work as well.

My experience was overwhelmingly better than originally expected.

And what are others saying?

Mederma Advanced Scar Gel

If that’s not all, I’ve got together a couple of other bits of feedback from real people that have given Mederma a go too. Just in case you’re worried about skin types and different characteristics changing results, here’s some diversity…

“I hadn’t really done anything for it over the years until I came across Mederma® and now I’ve seen great results. Even though it was an older scar, after using Mederma® Advanced Scar Gel for three months or so, it went from something people noticed all the time to something you wouldn’t notice it much at all unless you were really close to it.” – Jason, surgery scar

“I started using Mederma® about four years ago. First I used Mederma® Advanced Scar Gel for my C-section scar when I had my first child and it helped my scar very much. The way they cut me was kind of odd and my bathing suit wasn’t really covering it. But now you can’t even notice it when I go to the beach.” – Tracey, c-section
